Cheap bike fit v expensive bike fit

February 25th, 2009 No comments

This is a post I originally wrote in November 2008 about my bike fit.  Since I wrote it, I’ve been getting more and more comfortable on my bike.

When I first got my tri bike I had to set it up myself.  I had a play with it but just couldn’t get comfortable.  After a while I decided to get an expensive bike fit.  I spent an hour and a half with them and they videod me, lasered me, looked at me, adjusted things and I came away having spent a fortune on the fitting and a new adjustable stem.

But my arms still weren’t comfortable so I bought some differently shaped tri bar extensions, cut them to size and played with them and they were a bit more comfortable, but not that comfortable.  So I didn’t ride my tri bike too much.  I did a half on it and did better than expected but I wasn’t comfortable enough to do a full ironman on it.  So IMUK was done on my road bike.

I want to do Lanza on my tri bike.  It’ll be quicker into the wind but I need to be comfortable on it.  So I’ve been riding the bike more and getting more used to it.  My arms hurt less, my neck aches a bit, things are improving.

I decided to get a photo of me on my bike.  When I compared it to the pictures on the web, I found my position looked really bad.  So I went back to the set up info the expensive bike fit place gave me and compared the measurements to my bike.  I found the saddle had slipped 6cm.  And I hadn’t noticed it that much!  I also found that the seat angle was quite shallow on the measurements they gave me (74 degrees) compared with the 79 degrees that some people think is good.

I found an article on Slowtwitch which basically said that:

1. From the top of saddle to the end of aerobars (just before the shifters) should be the same distance as the top of the saddle is to the BB.

2. 79 degrees is good for most people

3. The drop between saddle and arm rests should be calculated by a simple formula (that gave 12cm of drop for me).

So armed with this info, a bit of trig, a spirit level, a long bit of wood and a tape measure I made some changes to my bike.  Saddle went forward, bars went down and forwards.  The result: the bike is comfortable-ish (it really does depend on what bike shorts I wear), there is a bit more pressure on my arms and my neck aches a lot more.  But there is no sign of any drop off in power and (I think) the position is more aero.

The neck ache should hopefully go as I get used to it.  I will be riding my tri bike a lot more than last year (four times a week at the moment).  Wearing the “right” bike shorts all the time will help.  I do need to work a little on my arm position still.

What I do find incredible though is that I can get a “better” bike position very quickly by following a very simple formula.  Obviously I don’t know what it is going to be like in a months time.  I might hate it.  But at the moment, it has potential.  So I am chuffed.

Henley River Swim

February 24th, 2009 No comments

I did the Henley River swim last year.  This is what I wrote before my blog was hacked.  I still want to do it again in 2009…

Out of interest, I got quoted in the Henley Standard.  I guess they read my blog!

 Henley swim

Next week is the start of the Henley Royal Regatta.  I am not a rower and so don’t know much about it.  I’ve learnt that some of the best crews in the world come to Henley to race up the river.  They race along a straight course in the Thames.  The course is completely straight because they put wooden logs along the course.  It is 2,112m long and it goes up stream so it is “really” a bit longer.

I think 5 years ago some people thought it might be a good idea to swim the course.  They decided that they didn’t want to get run over by anyone training on the course and so they started at 04:30 in the morning.  Over the next three years it got bigger but was still an “informal” swim.  I first heard of it last year but could not make the date.  This year they made it “formal” and I could make the date.  So I did it.

It still starts at 4:30am.  Registration is 3:00am to 4:00am and so I planned to turn up at 3:30am.  This meant getting up at 2:00am and leaving 30 minutes later.  I did this and got there at 3:30am only to find that I had shrunk.  I’m average height but most of the men in the club house were much, much taller than me.  They were mostly rowers.  Some might have been corporate finance – they’re always tall too.

At 4:00am we left for a ten minute walk to the start.  It was a beautiful morning, a little bit of mist on the river and no wind.  Absolutely perfect conditions.  A quick race briefing (go that way, stay in the course, the finish is at the end) and we were in the water.

Here’s a picture of the course with the Regatta is in full swim.  It was likely that except there were very few people in the crowd at this time in the morning.

We started by the island at the top and were aiming to swim towards the bridge.  There was a current but it was nowhere near as strong as Windsor.  Also, there was little opportunity to swim in shallows and the course was bounded by wooden logs, I decided just to stick to left hand side rather than to try and guess where it was best to swim.

The start was a bit of a bun fight and I swam quite hard but not all out.  People went past me.  After about 400m I started to go past the people who might have gone a bit hard at the start.  As there was no bike or run afterwards, I had decided to go harder than I did at Windsor.

After about 1k I saw a group of people ahead and pushed a bit harder to catch up.  I then eased off a bit and drafted in the group for a bit before carrying on.  For the last part I swam with a bloke without a wetsuit.  He was a bit ahead of me and then a bit behind and then I “wobbled” into the centre of the course and I think he may have beaten me.  There was also someone who stuck to my legs/side for the last 1,000m or so.

I had no idea where the finish was and that was kind of frustrating.  Eventually I got to it.  I couldn’t do a sprint finish as I had been sprinting for most of the swim!  By the finish my side hurt with the effort I had put in and my arm muscles felt like they were running out of strength.

I finished in something like 37mins plus change.  The winner did it in 29m 30s or so.  Karen Pickering, an Olympic medallist and former world champion came 7th in about 33 mins.  I think I came 19th out of 87 or so and so I was very pleased.

My average HR (inc 2 mins before the start) was 170bpm and my max was 179bpm.  I have never swam so hard!

If dates allow, I definitely want to do this next year.

A walk in the park

February 21st, 2009 No comments

I took the dogs for a walk this morning and got home about 8:30am.  I then had this cunning idea about doing the Basingstoke Park Run.  Trouble is it starts at 9:00am.  So 30 mins to find some kit, get 4 miles to town and do a warm up.  It was a bit of a rush but I did it.

I did this 5k before in November 2008 in 20 minutes 30 seconds.  I was disappointed with that time but it is what I did.

Today, I wanted sub-20 mins.  I have been training well for the last four months and so I felt I should have improved.

But I didn’t know who to run with and I didn’t want to run too fast to start with.  So I went reasonably quick but not all out.  There was a bloke who tried to overtake me about 0.5k in but I sped up a fraction.  Then he tried again about 1.8k so I asked him what time he normally runs.  He said twenty-and-a-half.  So I knew I had to beat him.  The first 2k were done in something like 7:50 but I felt I had a lot more in me.  So I pushed the pace up quite a bit until it started hurting.  The next 2k got me about a 100m lead over the guy I spoke to.  By this stage I had also caught up with someone who was 80m ahead of me at the half-way point.  I got to within 5m of someone else but kept thinking that I wanted to ease off the hurting.  I think I probably did in that I stopped gaining on the bloke in front and didn’t do a sprint for the line, so he beat me by about 10m.

By my watch, I think I finished in around 19:38.  The results aren’t up yet but as the organiser has probably only just got home!

That gives me a VDOT of 50.  It also predicts a half-marathon time of 1:31.

So, all in all, a good start to the day.

Two new races for 2009…

February 21st, 2009 No comments

I’ve decided to enter:

- The New Forest Triathlon.  This is nearly an Olympic distance race on 3 May 2009.  I’ve entered it because I want to do a race before Lanzarotte and there are not many to choose from.  It has a 1,100m lake swim and so will be really, really cold.  I did it in 2007 and the lake swim caused me problems because (1) I wasn’t in the lake until a couple of seconds before it started and (2) my goggles kept leaking.  I was disappointed with the bike because it was the first time I had put clip on tri bars on to it for a long time and I wasn’t used to the position.  The run is mostly off road and I wasn’t used to that sort of thing then either.  Hopefully, I’ll do better this year.

- The British Triathlon National Club Relay Championship in Nottingham.  This is on 22 August 2009.  I am doing this with people at work and we are planning on entering three teams of four people.  I haven’t a clue what the distance is:  The swim is either 400m, 500m or 750m, the bike is either 15k or 20k and the run is 5k.  Different bits of the website say different things!

Less than 14 weeks to go…

February 16th, 2009 1 comment

… before Lanzarote.

How do I feel?  Generally pretty good.  I nearly always ache these days though.  Sunday’s and Monday’s are probably the achiest days of the week but then again every day aches.

In terms of swim, bike, run?

- Swim: no worries.  I am swimming more than ever.

- Run: I can do it.  I am running more than ever too.  The “average” of my runs is more than an hour (compared with 40 or so minutes last year).  Also, all my running is being done at a much faster pace this year.  However, most of it at the moment is on a treadmill.  But that is getting me stronger in the mind.

- Bike: This is the issue.  I don’t feel I am good enough yet.  My legs just aren’t as strong as my heart and lungs at the moment.  Also, I am not hugely comfortable in the aero position at the end of my long rides.  But there is a lot of time to go yet.

Yesterday I did a 4 hour ride.  I didn’t run straight after but I did a 50 min run later in the afternoon.  This was cross country, in the rain and mud, with the dogs.   They loved it!  They slept a lot afterwards!

A good long run

February 14th, 2009 No comments

I did my long run on the treadmill today. I could have gone outside but I just fancied doing it on a treadmill.

The session was:

- 10 mins easy

- 5 mins of 30s “hard”, 30s “off”

- 15 x (5 mins moderate, 1 min easy)

- 10 mins easy

I used a treadmill at the gym that has a big mirror in front so I can keep my mind busy by looking at what is happening around me.  The treadmill is not particularly well calibrated so the speeds don’t mean much in real life.  Last week I did the same session with easy being 11.4kph and moderate being 12.4kph.  While it was a challenge, it wasn’t particularly hard.  So this week I increased the speeds to 12kph and 13kph respectively.  This felt a lot more of a challenge, especially on the last three intervals.  So my legs now ache big time.

I know that it is not well calibrated because yesterday I did 1 minute intervals on it at 20kph.  In my dreams!

Swimmimg takes it out of me

February 6th, 2009 No comments

I am on a train on the way home. I have had a good day and I think that is about to end. There has been a huge amount of snow at home and I’ve been told that I won’t be able to drive anywhere near to the house. One of my neighbours walked three miles home. Another has taken over three hours to go 15 miles or so. And she is still not back.

This morning’s swim was hard and honest. I did 4k (Inc 3x3x400m). The three fast 400m were on 6:12, 6:15 and 6:12. A new record. The 400m were done fast, 10s, moderate, 10s, easy, 1min. I felt shattered all morning.

I’ve got an all-out interval run this evening. Once I have done that I will have done all the sessions over the last 7 days exactly right! Another record.

Yet more snow…

February 5th, 2009 No comments

I got up a bit later than normal today as I had a breakfast meeting in London and so wasn’t going to do any exercise this morning.  And I looked out and saw more snow.  Another 2 inches or snow.  This will make it hard to get to the main road as I couldn’t get to my house using the normal road yesterday afternoon.   Texted one of the people I was having breakfast with and the meeting is now cancelled.  So, I am working from home.   Schools out as well so working from home’s not going to be as easy as it could be.

I went to the gym yesterday and did 90 mins on one of their spin bikes.  First 45 mins was easy, next 35m was “hard” and the last 10m was a cool down.  I was listening to a podcast on the easy and first part of the “hard” bit.  When I put some fast music on, I realised that the first bit of “hard” was more “uncomfortable” than hard so I really picked up the effort and felt very virtuous in doing so.  A good day exercise wise

Remote posting?

February 4th, 2009 No comments

Hi, this is a test to see if I can post remotely. I wonder if this will work? Also, will you be able to see the photo. I took it a couple of days ago and it shows lots of snow.
